Division of Criminal Investigation
Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) agents specialize in a number of fields. At the request of city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies, the division's investigators provide direct assistance in a broad range of criminal investigations.
DCI assists in cases including, but not limited to:
- homicide and other violent crimes
- narcotics investigations, including methamphetamine production and trafficking
- arson and other fire investigations
- Medicaid fraud
- elder abuse and exploitation within health care facilities
- computer crime
- sex crimes
- corruption and official misconduct
- complex financial crimes
The division also:
- maintains Montana's Sexual or Violent Offender Registry
- provides advanced training opportunities for law enforcement officials statewide
- operates the Montana All Threat Intelligence Center (MATIC) and addresses homeland security issues

Fire Prevention and Investigation Section

Investigative Support Section
The Investigative Support Section is responsible for investigating crimes involving the use of computers; maintaining the Sexual or Violent Offender Registry; providing advanced training opportunities for law enforcement officials statewide; operating the Montana All Threat Intelligence Center (MATIC); and addressing homeland security issues.

Major Case Section
The Major Case Section provides criminal investigative assistance to city, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies at their request. The section also conducts criminal investigations of allegations referred by the Montana State Fund and the Department of Justice, Motor Vehicle Division.

Medicaid Fraud Control Section
The Medicaid Fraud Control Section is responsible for investigating any crime that occurs in a health care facility, including theft, drug diversion, sexual assault and homicide. The section also investigates elder exploitation, elder abuse and fraud by providers within the Medicaid system. This may include investigations into doctors, dentists, durable medical equipment companies, mental health providers and other Medicaid providers.
