Montana Highway Patrol
Montana is often referred to as the last best place. It's a great place to live, vacation and travel. We can all enjoy Montana's splendors, especially if we all do our part to make it a safe place to drive.
The Montana Highway Patrol (MHP) is committed to maintaining the safety of Montana's highways. We diligently enforce traffic laws including DUI, failure to use seatbelts, speeding and other dangerous driving violations. But we cannot do it alone: we depend on your cooperation. Together, we can make our highways safer. Buckle up. Slow down. And enjoy your travels in Big Sky Country.
The Patrol offers many rewarding careers. To ensure that the Patrol reflects the people of our state, we encourage women and minorities to consider joining our agency.
Colonel Paul K. Grimstad, Chief Administrator
Mission
The Highway Patrol's mission is to safeguard the lives and property of the people using the highway traffic system of Montana through education, service and enforcement.
The Patrol's 200 troopers cover great distances to police our state highways, assist other law enforcement agencies and help motorists in need. Each year, the men and women of the Patrol:
- drive more than 5.5 million miles
- respond to over 70,000 calls for service
- issue more than 85,000 arrest tickets and more than 100,000 warning tickets
Troopers provide public safety education presentations on nearly every subject related to driving safety, including seatbelt use, driving under the influence and child safety. To schedule a presentation, contact the nearest MHP district office.
